Boxing In February

First off, apologies to anyone who drops in regularly — a few days off turned into a week+ before I knew what hit me. I’ve finally gotten off my lazy ass long enough to make some updates to the Watch List though, and much to my surprise February isn’t looking so bleak anymore.
I missed (skipped) Castillo-Reyes, but I’m glad Castillo got the win so there’s nothing to derail WWIII with Corrales. We’ve got Margarito-Gomez fast-approaching on the 18th, with an undercard featuring Brian Viloria, Ivan Calderon, and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
In an interesting development that only recently crossed my radar, the folks at iN DEMAND are putting together a PPV event that headlines Glen Johnson vs. Richard Hall and David Tua vs. Javier Mora from Hollywood, Florida on the 24th. Undercard details were still pretty sketchy everywhere I looked, but pencil in Timor Ibragimov and Joel Casamayor against a couple of TBAs.
One night later the rip-you-off…er, I mean pay-per-view match between Sugar Shane and El Feroz will grace television screens nationwide. Someone can tell me how that one comes out, as my money’s on the undercard bouts for entertainment. It’s not the most encouraging sign of a resurgence in the heavyweight division when Calvin Brock’s the new great hope, but the boxer/banker lovers can catch the Calvinator against the pride of Poughkeepsie, Zuri Lawrence, who will no doubt extend his perfect streak of 0 KOs in 34 fights. Of greater interest, perhaps, Jhonny Gonzalez will defend his WBO bantamweight belt against Mark Johnson. Personally, I’m mostly jazzed about getting to see Joel Julio. Last I checked his opponent was yet to be named, but the young Colombian has enough hype coming into this one he could probably get away with shadow boxing.
