Demetrius “The Gladiator” Hopkins, nephew of Bernard, won a UD against Mario Jose Ramos tonight in a welterweight bout at the New Alhambra Center in South Philly.

Truly his uncle’s nephew, Hopkins displayed solid discipline for such a young fighter, controlling range (at least early), picking his shots, and keeping his cool against the southpaw. By the 5th round his superior speed and power were apparent as he began to take control of the fight. By the 9th, still without a winning round, Ramos began to look a little desperate. He managed to survive the 12th, but was clearly hurt.

Hopkins did leave himself open on occasion, but mostly in the later rounds when I think he was convinced Ramos couldn’t hurt him. He still looks a little rough around the edges, but on the whole he put together a solid performance in front of the home crowd.

Hopkins’ record now stands at 23-0-1 (9), Ramos falls to 16-2-1 (3).
